 Australia
Version date: September 21, 2017
Due to the many changes, the Australian government now strongly suggests that you use an IPATA agent, to arrange shipment of your pets to Australia. We are an IPATA agent to contact.
PERTH: Byford Quarantine Center PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
Member of IPATA since 2000, a member of ATA previously since 1994.
SYDNEY: Eastern Creek Quarantine facility PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
MELBOURNE: As of November 2015, only the Mickleham, Victoria quarantine facility is OPEN to quarantine of all live animals entering Australia.
10 DAY QUARANTINE: There is now a 10 day mandatory quarantine for all pets entering Australia from Canada. Your pet(s) must wait in Canada 180 days from the blood draw date of a successful Rabies Titre test. The emphasis for avoiding 30 day quarantine is on there being no Ticks present on the pet when examined in Australia - if your pet has ticks, it stays in quarantine 30 days.
CHANGES HAPPEN: Petflight is up to speed with the present labyrinth of dates, tests, vaccinations, reporting, and exceptions for each case. Even so, the Australian Government changes things without warning. In June 2014, they suddenly changed the active ingredient of tick treatments for cats, the permit itself is always changing, and as of spring 2015, the very unuser friendly BICON system came in to effect. Be aware that sudden government rulings do sometimes make pet shipping more effort, and more costly than expected.
BRACHIOCEPHALIC: In 2015, airlines that accepted squish nosed dogs and cats suddenly refused to take them. Presently there is only one routing from Toronto to Australia, and we use it.
EMBARGO: In the extreme heat of summer, airlines refuse live cargo (your pets) until the temperature drops under Deg 29.5C actual effective for that entire date - not just the daylight hours; for Brachiocephalic breeds, it's Deg 24C.  This is for safe ground transport without danger of your pet dieing due to the extreme temperature. As summers become hotter, this becomes more and more a problem with timed permits like to Australia and New Zealand. The only way to deal with temperature embargoes, when it is obvious the temperature will pose a conflict, is to pay for an extension, and confirm quarantine space will remain open, while the airline decides the temperature issue on a day to day basis, or fly in a more temperate month.
As a Toronto based premier dog and cat shipping company for Australia, Petflight encourages you to contact us for the relocation of your pets.
FRONTLINE PLUS FOR CATS AND FRONTLINE PLUS FOR DOGS: This has been an ongoing problem; but as of September 2017 (time of writing), Frontline Brand Products still has not yet sought Canadian Government approval for the sale of their tick killing products (at least in Ontario). While you may be able to buy Frontline in the States, if it's not legally available for vets to buy in Canada, then it's not legal for vets to give in Canada.
The Government of Australia requires a product that will kill ticks and fleas 'on contact', as stated on the manufacturers information on their product. So you can't just chose a flea and tick killer off the pet center shelf and think it's good enough. It's not good enough. For dogs, there's several products that Canada and Australia approves, BUT the only legal product in Canada that can be used on cats is nasty stuff, and the manufacturer states that treatment cannot be given less than 7 days apart. Flea and tick control products are species, and weight specific.
